Pongal is the biggest festival of harvesting in South India. It is celebrated every year in the mid of January. Its Celebrations last for four days. The four days of Celebration are Bhogi, Pongal, Maatu Pongal, and Kaanum Pongal.
- Bhogi Pongal: People cleaned their houses and, get rid of old things and decorations started.
- Surya Pongal: This is the 1st day of the South India Month. This day is also called Thai Pongal. People offered Pongal to the Sun God.
- Mattu Pongal: On this day, the farmer expresses his happiness of a fresh harvest. That is in the form of food and sweets.
- Kaanum Pongal: This day is more like Raksha Bandhan. Brother pays tribute to their sisters, and families get together on this day.
Pongal is considered the beginning of Uttarayan ( The Sun moves north from the Tropic of Capricorn).
It is the festival that day thank the sun god for providing nourishment to the crops throughout the year. Everypne wear new clothes and pray to God to shower his blessings on this day.
